Employment Verification System Combats Illegal Immigration
Washington, D.C. – On Monday, June 23rd U.S. Representative Heath Shuler will host an
informational briefing on E-Verify for the Asheville Chamber of Commerce with the
Acting Director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, Jonathan Scharfen. E-Verify is
currently a voluntary program being used by over 69,000 employers to check the legal
status of their workers. It has been made mandatory by several states including, Arizona,
Georgia, and South Carolina, and an Executive Order was recently issued requiring all
federal contractors to use the system. Phasing-in E-Verify for all employers is a major
component of Rep. Shuler’s SAVE Act.
Director Schrafen’s presentation will focus on how employers can use E-Verify simply
and effectively. He will also be available to answer questions form business owners about
how E-Verify would affect their hiring practices.
