Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Heath Shuler and his Blue Dog Coalition
colleagues met with President Obama at the White House Tuesday evening to discuss the
need for long-term fiscal reform. The discussion focused on the need to bring more
accountability and oversight to the federal budget process and the tremendous need to
work toward a balanced budget.
Shuler and the Blue Dogs have been outspoken advocates of a responsible national fiscal
policy and have committed to working with the President and Congressional leaders to
take meaningful steps toward returning our nation to sustainable fiscal and economic
policies.
“I am encouraged by today’s meeting and the Blue Dogs look forward to working closely
with President Obama to return our nation to a path of fiscal responsibility,” said Shuler,
the Blue Dog Whip.
“While we address the current economic crisis, we must be mindful that our long-term
economic health depends on reducing the national debt and balancing the budget. Having
a President who is committed to realistically addressing our long-term fiscal health brings
is a huge first step toward reaching that goal.”
The Blue Dogs also discussed entitlement reform, a fiscal reform summit, and a recent
change to the House rules that requires every committee to hold at least three hearings a
year to root out waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending.
