Washington, D.C.--- Representative Heath Shuler today announced that the South Toe Fire Department in Yancey County has secured a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program grant through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This $212,000 grant will be used to recruit additional volunteer firefighters.
“This grant is excellent news for firefighters in Yancey County and the community they serve and protect,” Rep. Shuler said. “Now more than ever, we must ensure that our local first responders have the equipment, training, and resources they need to stay on the job keeping our communities safe. This grant will enable the South Toe Fire Department to continue their outstanding service to the people of Yancey County.”
SAFER grants help fire departments across the country recruit, hire, and retain firefighters and first responders. The goal of the SAFER grant program is to provide local first responders with the ability to maintain 24-hour staffing to ensure their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards.
